Confession: I am a SmartPak addict.
Domino’s SmartPaks are my main monthly splurge, and I think they are absolutely worth it. So I figured it would be fun and mildly informative to do a few reviews and posts about his tried-and-true supplements, starting with the one he has been on the longest: BioFlax 20 by HorseTech, Inc.
Flax isn’t just a yuppy Whole Foods health food craze product – it’s also got lots of benefits for horses. It’s a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids and has anti-inflammatory effects. I feed BioFlax 20 because it has ground flax seed and biotin, making it an awesome way to help keep his hooves, coat, and skin healthy and happy-looking. He lives outside 24/7 without blanketing, and he comes in from the field looking like this:
Of course the most important part of keeping a horse’s hooves and coat looking great is a balanced diet and proper exercise, but I think the BioFlax 20 helps give a little bit more polish. And for horses like Domino who have been genetically cursed with abysmal hooves, a biotin supplement can be a huge help.
I have used BioFlax 20 with Domino for about two years. It’s not a super fast-acting supplement: it takes a full hoof cycle or the growth of next season’s coat to really show its effects. But within a few months, I started getting lots of compliments on how shiny Domino always looked in the field despite being unblanketed and loving his rolling. And for about $16 per month, it’s really easy on the wallet, too. I think I get a lot of bang for my buck out of this supplement.
Do you feed any supplements or have any experiences with flax seed?
